he Tonto National Forest is the largest national forest in the southwest. Presi-
dent Theodore Roosevelt issued a proclamation creating it in 1905. The origi-
nal tract of some 1.1 million acres, predominantly woodland (chaparral, pi-
non, juniper) and Ponderosa pine forest, is located below the Mogollon Rim and

above the 4,000 foot elevation.
Today the Tonto National Forest has grown to 2.8 million acres maintained
and operated under the auspices of the U.S. Forest Service. Maps, brochures, and
friendly advice are available at the Payson Ranger Station located on the south side
of Arizona 260 between Payson and Star Valley. (928-474-7900) 
