Jazztel
I became an equity holding Marketing Director of Jazztel in
1998. We raised $500m in capital and in 2000 the
company was valued at $7.5bn!
Metrored
In 1999 I formed Metrored which provided telecom
services to local businesses in Valencia. As part of our
marketing we sponsored the local and somewhat
underperforming football club. To everyone’s surprise,
including ours, Valencia won La Liga in our first year of
sponsorship and qualified for Europe – their first proper
success for over three decades! Our sponsorship shot up
in value and we sold the rights on for a very nice profit.
Sabbatical
I scaled down Metrored in keeping with changing
conditions in the telecom sector. The company still
operates profitably and we are involved with Hits, a Kuwaiti
backed white label mobile brand whose games will be
appearing on GEM Island. During this period I also
founded Gextech, creators of the Fantastic League, an
exciting virtual fixed odds sports betting concept (of which
I am still a shareholder) as well as a number of incubator
businesses. I was recently appointed CIO of the €20bn
Gran Scala project in Spain. Gran Scala will be a leisure
city in the heart of Spain that will be an historical journey
through Time, Civilisation and Cultures.
Reflections
Whilst some people are only content by being and acting
cautiously, my outlook has always been to think slightly
differently and to follow my intuition. I think if something
instinctively feels right and you are prepared to put the
effort in to make it work – then go for it. After all you are a
long time old and an even longer time dead!
