Letters What the poets are saying

I liked your article about rhymes that help you predict weather [Summer 2008], but you missed a few. Here are two that I use all the time. I like them because, unlike some of the longer ones you mentioned, they are easy to remember. Tey work best for short-term forecasts:

“If you look up and see the sun, the chances it’s a-raining are none.”

“When water’s falling from the sky, lo, behold, rain is nigh.”

I thought you might find these paintings of interest. I love to paint the northern landscapes we visit

Whip it yourself

As an avid reader of your magazine, and an even more devot- ed fan of [new wave, post-punk band] Devo, I took some sat- isfaction in your referencing of a Devo song in the Reader’s Tip section about whipping paddles [Summer 2008]. However, as an earnest Devotee, I have to take issue with

your choice of songs. Devo is so much more than “Whip It.” Like many other bands that have a hit song that draws atten- tion from the rest of the oeuvre, Devo is a victim of its own success. Because of the reach of “Whip It,” other equally fine songs are overlooked. I can suggest a few other songs for future nods. “Jerkin’

Back N’ Forth” (for an exposé of bad stern paddlers), “Free- dom of Choice” (for a tragically ironic look at negotiating braided river channels) and “Going Under” (self-explana- tory) all come to mind. What we call “Whipititis” has plagued Devotees since we

first donned yellow jump suits to usher in the 1980s. I trust your magazine will better reflect Devo’s depth in the future. Devotedly,
