First Aid in a Bottle PACK IT UP, AND PACK IT IN


Now that Health Canada has cast a pox on bisphenol A plastics you must be wondering what to do with that clear, one-litre water bottle. Turn it from a health hazard into a medical necessity by packing it with most of the essential first aid supplies you’ll need for a short wilderness foray. The bottles are waterproof, durable, and so compact you’ll never again have an excuse for not being prepared for the inevitable cuts, scrapes, twists and burns.


Steri Strips Topical sutures. Handy for closing cuts.


Non-stick sterile gauze pads Two 2”x3” pads. Easier to remove than normal gauze.


Antibiotic ointment Offers some protection against infection.


Sterile gauze pads Two 4”x4” pads to cover wounds.


Biopore occlusive dressing Waterproof, breathable dressing. For protecting wounds in wet settings.


Trauma pad


For excessive bleeding. Keep it on top.


Latex gloves Keep an extra pair in kit.


Lanyard


So you can tie it in (the plastic cap loop always breaks).


Cling wrap Gauze roll secures dressings.


EMT shears Will cut anything.


Sterile cotton tip applicator For eye injuries and cleaning wounds.


Antiseptic wipes For cleaning wounds. Should not be alcohol-based.


IN YOUR PFD POCKET


Iodine For disinfecting water. Do not use on open wounds.


Latex gloves Keep them in a film can- ister (if you can still find one) to keep them dry.


Face shield For rescue breathing.


Sunscreen


Accident report form Bring a pencil.


Athletic tape Inch-wide roll. For taping strains and sprains.


Benzoin (friar’s balsam) For preparing wet skin so tape will adhere.


PAD BUNDLE


Elastoplast bandages Cut to fit.


Mole Skin Protects from blisters.


Spenco Tuff Knit Thinner than Mole Skin.


Spenco Second Skin Great for cushioning blisters. Best applied with Tuff Knit.
