IN A SEA OF SOY SAUCE A MUNICIPAL FORESTRY consultant in Japan decided to create a use for the for- ests of disposable chopsticks he saw being thrown out at his city hall cafeteria. Shuhei Ogawara collected more than 7,000 dis- carded chopsticks over the course of two years before gluing them together into a 66-pound canoe hull. Ogawara is now busy collecting those little green pieces of paper that come with sushi and have been cut to look like grass so he can make a wilderness area to paddle in.

Fix your zipper with a pinched runner
If the runner on your worn out zipper isn’t tight enough the teeth won’t properly mesh and the zipper will separate after you close it. All you need to fix it is a pair of pliers (a multi-tool will work). The fix takes a few seconds and adds years of life to your tents, packs, jackets and sleeping bags. 1. Back the zipper up past the problem area to where the teeth are meshing properly.
2. Pinch together the top and bottom lobes of the runner on each side of the toggle.
3. Tighten and test incrementally, so you don’t overtighten.
