Once one of
Ireland’s most
gracious demesnes,
belonging to the elegant early
Victorian Brownlow House, the
beautifully landscaped Lurgan Park
is now the second biggest public park in
Ireland. You can enjoy rowing or fishing
on its famous lake, follow a fascinating
eco trail, try a variety of delightful walks,
bowling or tennis or let the kids loose
at the state-of-the-art play park.
While you’re there look out for the
unique Coalbrookdale Fountain,
originally erected to celebrate Queen
Victoria’s Jubilee.
Four miles south of Portadown
you will discover the tranquillity
of the Newry Canal towpath. Both
Portadown Town Hall Theatre and
Lurgan Town Hall stage excellent drama,
concerts, fashion shows, exhibitions and dance and
music festivals throughout the year. The rich history
of Portadown and Lurgan and the surrounding area
can be traced at Craigavon Museum on Oxford
Island, including the 2,500 books of local history
in the Philip B Wilson collection. It also holds one
of the largest libraries of Quaker books in
Ireland, tracing their history from the middle of
the 17
th
century, when Lurgan was the venue Tannaghmore Gardens,
