In 2003, northern Ireland Water (nIW) appointed
Atkins to deliver one of the largest civil
engineering projects for the city of Belfast.
The £120 million scheme comprises a major
Stormwater Management Works project to
improve water quality in the river lagan
and reduce flood risk, together with the
rehabilitation and upgrading of Belfast’s mainly
victorian sewer system.
To date, nIW has undertaken the structural repair of
some 500 sewers. Atkins is responsible for project
management, planning, preliminary design, contract
supervision and administration associated with the
tunnel scheme.
The project includes the construction of 9.5km of
tunnels ranging from 1.5 metres to 4 metres in
diameter distributed throughout the city centre at
depths between 10 to 30 metres. The works also
incorporate 21 access shafts with varying diameters
between 6 and 15 metres.
The largest civil engineering structural element is the
recently completed terminal pumping station located
at Duncrue Wastewater Treatment Works. The
pumping station is designed to accommodate a 1 in
30 year storm event and will be capable of pumping
16 cumecs of stormwater which will reduce the risk
of sewer flooding in the Belfast area.
