For Southern Water, Atkins has developed an
easy-to-use Carbon Calculator to estimate the carbon
dioxide equivalent (CO
2
eq) emissions associated with
a number of engineering solutions. The calculator
was created based on the latest Defra guidance
and UKWIR reports on calculating operational and
embodied carbon.
The calculator is also based on a number of ‘work
packages’ which range from pipelines to the
installation of water meters. Each work package
comprises the main materials, components and
works equipment required to create an installation of
a designated size. The carbon emissions associated
with each work package comprise:
• Embodied carbon of primary construction
materials and components;
• Carbon dioxide emitted during construction,
including the delivery of materials; and
• Carbon dioxide emissions emitted during
operation of the completed option (including
methane and nitrous oxide as carbon
dioxide equivalents).

The user selects the number and capacity of as
