CHILDREN AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Children, especially in Africa and Asia, are already suffering as a result
of climate change. They face a future in which temperature and
precipitation changes mean that disasters, violence and disease will be
more frequent and intense; clean water becomes less accessible and
incomes will fall. Children will be hardest hit: the negative impacts of
climate change are predicted to lead to increased child poverty, more
inequality and malnutrition and death rates.
UNICEF is already working with children and their communities to deal with climate change:
• Supporting communities to better prepare for natural disasters as they become more
frequent.
• Tackling the problem of contaminated and/or diminishing water supplies by providing wells
and pumps and using innovative techniques such as rainwater harvesting.
• Replacing fossil fuels with solar power.
UNICEF Inspired Gifts offer the opportunity to give exciting and original gifts to friends and
family, gifts that make double the difference: to children and to the problem of global
16 warming.
