For anyone that likes beer, amusement rides and
buxom wenches – and who doesn’t? – a trip to Oktoberfest
can be a pretty uplifting experience. Most amusement park owners can
only dream of attracting around six million guests a year, yet this world
famous event in Munich does it in just 16 days!
At weekends, however, the crowds on the “Wiesn” (Oktoberfest site)
can become unbearable. Fortunately, visitors to the upcoming Euro
Attractions Show (EAS) will be able to benefit from reserved seating inside
the Paulaner beer tent if they buy a ticket to the EAS party on October 1.
It’s one of several enticing social events being held as part of EAS and
the preceding IAAPA Summer Meeting in Munich.
Yet while no one doubts the appeal of Oktoberfest, IAAPA’s decision to
hold the new autumn/fall EAS so soon after January’s show in Nice – and
just seven weeks before IAAPA Attractions Expo in Orlando – seems a little
irresponsible. Flights and hotels in Munich are already at a premium
around this time of year, so almost everyone who attends the trade show
is going to end up being stung with high costs one way or another. It
would have made much more sense to wait and do it all in 2009.
But by rushing ahead and staging EAS in Munich this year, IAAPA steals
a march on Interschau (now Interschau-Technofolies), the long established
German exhibition that will take place one month later in Stuttgart, and
which is sure to be affected as a result. One group of operators should
find Interschau very convenient, however: The German showmen that will
be open with their rides and attractions at Oktoberfest so have no time to
visit EAS. They also like a beer or two.
