FLOOR MATTING
In recent years, horse owners have been presented with a growing choice of flooring for stables, boxes and walkways.
While this is usually a decision of personal preference, it may be useful to help you compare the different aspects of the
various choices available.
Why use Floor Matting?
Floor mats generally offer your horse a softer, warmer more comfortable surface than concrete on which to
stand or lie while in the stable. The underside of floor mats is specifically shaped to allow
water to pass beneath, thus allowing better drainage, while keeping it away from your
horse. The improved drainage and softer surface mean that you should not need to use as
much bedding as would be necessary in a stable without matting. Depending upon how
much you spend on shavings or straw and how often you decide to change the bedding,
you may find that the initial cost of installing the mats is soon saved by the fact that you’re
using less bedding.
Watch when your horse lies down. Horses are large animals built primarily for running
and adapted to rest on soft ground. Only in the last few centuries have they been
expected to rest on harder surfaces, which through the addition of bedding, humans
have attempted to make softer. You can see that horses tend to ‘flop’ down about six
inches before they touch the ground. While this is not a source of injury or particular
distress, a softer surface gives added comfort during a motion that a horse is not able to
make any differently. A comfortable surface may be even more important to you if you have
older or larger horses and also mares in foal.
Rubber or EVA Matting?
Rubber matting is the more established of the two. The 17mm
rubber mats in this catalogue have been offered for many years
now and have a proven track record with customers all over the
country. As you may imagine, rubber is more comfortable than
concrete and offers better insulation against cold than bedding
alone. They are heavy, at about 33 kg each and their own
weight helps them to follow the contours of an uneven floor.

use and should be laid with a 10 mm gap around the wall edges.
The mat should be monitored for the first few weeks as a further
trim may be needed. The gaps can be annoying in the first few
weeks - especially with EVA as shavings fall down the gaps but it
will settle after a few weeks.
