NHS failing lesbian and
bisexual women
Stonewall and DeMontfort University have
published the results of a study, Prescription for
Change, looking at how the NHS treats lesbian and
bisexual patients. 6,000 lesbian and bisexual
women were interviewed as part of the study. The
study concluded that health professionals were
largely ignorant to the specifi c needs of this group,
particularly in the areas of sexual and mental health.
Uproar over vampire fi lm
Online group Angry Lesbians has spoken out against
fi lmmaker Matthew Horne’s new fi lm Lesbian
Vampire Killers. The fi lm will depict the adventures
of two men stranded in a remote cottage where
they attract the interest of a group of lesbian vampires.
Angry Lesbians spokeswoman Geraldine Joosten
described the fi lm as being “used to titillate men”.
Lesbian and straight male brains ‘the same’
A study conducted by scientists at the Karolinka Institute in Sweden has revealed that
lesbian brains more closely resemble those of straight males than those of their straight
female counterparts, with the same applying to gay male brains and straight female
brains. The study was based on brain scans taken from 90 different gay and straight
male and female volunteers. The exact nature of the similarity lies in the fact that lesbian
brains and straight male brains tend to have a slightly enlarged right hemisphere.
Straight female and gay male brains, on the other hand, tend to have symmetrical
hemispheres. It was also observed that more connecting nerves tend to exist between
the two hemispheres in gay male and straight female brains.
