In recent years, horse owners have been presented with a growing choice of flooring for stables, boxes and
walkways. While this is usually a decision of personal preference, it may be useful to help you compare the
different aspects of the various choices available.

the mat sample you require.
Watch when your horse lies down. Horses are large animals built primarily for running
and adapted to rest on soft ground. Only in the last few centuries have they been
expected to rest on harder surfaces, which through the addition of bedding, humans
have attempted to make softer. You can see that horses tend to ‘flop’ down about six
inches before they touch the ground. While this is not a source of injury or particular
distress, a softer surface gives added comfort during a motion that a horse is not able
to make any differently. A comfortable surface may be even more important to you if
you have older or larger horses and also mares in foal.
Rubber or EVA Matting?
Rubber matting is the more established of the two. The 17mm rubber mats in this catalogue
have been offered for many years now and have a proven track record with customers all over
the country. As you may imagine,
rubber is more comfortable than concrete and offers better insulation against cold than
bedding alone. They are heavy and their own weight helps them to follow the contours of an
uneven floor.
EVA is a man-made compound that can be made to various levels of density or softness.
The EVA mats we offer have been formulated specially for the requirements of horses. EVA
offers greater comfort than rubber and is easier to cut and therefore install than rubber. As EVA
is light, it is easy to remove on a regular basis to clean underneath when the bed is changed. It
may not be as suitable as rubber if your floor is uneven.
Please note, both types of matting spread in the first few weeks of use and should be laid with
a 10 mm gap around the wall edges. The mat should be monitored for the first few
weeks as a further trim may be needed. The gaps can be annoying in the first few
weeks - especially with EVA as shavings fall down the gaps but it will settle
after a few weeks.
Need for bedding, then?
Our advice is always to use some bedding, whatever matting
you use. Bedding does not merely provide a soft surface and
so it is advisable to continue to use bedding for ‘banking’
along the walls to provide a safer environment for your
horse. We advise that you continue to use a level
of bedding that you feel provides an optimum
level of safety and comfort, to avoid
‘splashing’ and to absorb the liquid
before the next daily mucking out. It is
quite likely, however, that you should
see your bedding usage reduce
substantially.
Do I need to do anything to the stable?
While many customers use matting as a means to improve the performance of an existing stable, an increasing number of horse owners are building new stables and see floor
matting as a way to maximise the comfort of their new stable. Whether the stable is new or old, please consider the following features when preparing for floor matting:
Before you fit the mats, apply a masonry sealant or floor paint to the hard floor. Untreated concrete does absorb fluids and once this happens, the odour is harder to remove.
Similarly, give thought to what might happen to fluids that pass beneath your mats. The area underneath the mats can be flushed with water provided that a drainage point is
available. If at all possible, design or create a drainage channel (at the lowest point of the floor) to take fluids (and their odours) out of your stable.
