Indoor waterpark market grows
According to the year-end survey of indoor waterparks in the United States and Canada by
Hotel & Leisure Advisors (H&LA), the number of indoor destination resorts has grown from 30
available properties as of year-end 2005 to 43 available properties as of year-end 2006.
Twelve waterpark additions to existing hotels or new properties, all of which meet H&LA's
definition of indoor waterpark destination resorts, are projected to open in 2007. Further resorts
are currently in development and likely to begin construction this year.
The Great Wolf Lodge brand offers the greatest number of indoor waterpark destination
resorts in the United States and Canada and also has the greatest number of new resort
properties under construction.
Magical coaster for Gröna Lund
The new ride is a Suspended
Family Coaster by Vekoma
What is described by the park as the biggest single investment in its history will open
this spring at Gröna Lund, Stockholm, Sweden. Kvasten (“Broomstick”) is a
Suspended Family Coaster from Vekoma Rides Manufacturing with new bucket-style
seating and heavy theming courtesy of Farmer Attraction Development.
The new attraction will be located between the existing Spökhuset (Haunted House)
and Flygande Mattan (Flying Carpet) and take on a magical theme as riders soar
above the treetops and dive towards the ground with their legs hanging free. It is,
says a park spokesperson, “as close as it gets to flying a broomstick.”
The station area for the new coaster will be themed as a dilapidated old mansion,
and passengers will pass through it twice during their ride. Other scenic elements
include a water-spitting troll. In total, the ride and theming represent a SEK55 million
(€6m) investment.
“It is unbelievably exciting to be able to offer Gröna Lund's visitors such an
attraction,” says the park's CEO, Ulf Larsson.
Gröna Lund reopens for the 2007 season April 28.
