Air Cargo Screening

managements. The pilot system was
fabricated by D.W. Nicholson under
contract to the City and County of San
Francisco and in accordance with a
design developed by Quatrotec, Inc. The
United Airlines cargo facility, operated
by Swissport, was selected as the site.
United is the largest cargo carrier at
SFO. The pilot system began screening
cargo in June 2007 using ETD only. EDS
screening of cargo was added in October
2007. Initially, it will process 100% of
United’s cargo. In the future, excess
capacity may be used to screen the
cargo of other carriers.
Figure 1 is a three-dimensional illustration
of the Quatrotec-designed system; Figure 2
is a photograph of the system in operation. It
is designed maximise throughput at the
minimum possible footprint and staff level,
while providing the staff with a safe and
ergonomic work environment. It is extremely
