Employment levels at record high

The number of people in employment in Wales is at record levels, according to official government figures.
The report from the Office for National Statistics revealed that the number of people employed in Wales increased by 13,000 to reach 1.36m – over 72 per cent of the total population of working age.
Ieuan Wyn Jones, Deputy First Minister, told the Western Mail: “These latest figures, including the substantial reduction in the levels of economic inactivity, are good news for Wales.
As Minister for the Economy and Transport, I will continue to ensure that the Assembly Government provides effective support for businesses the length and breadth of Wales. Creating further employment opportunities within a competitive, diverse and dynamic economy.”
There are currently 418,000 people of working age but not in a job and the Assembly Government has set a target of achieving 80 per cent employment.

Recycling plant to create 200 jobs

Tredegar-based EnviroParks Ltd has announced plans to build a new £60m recycling plant on a 17- acre site in Aberdare, creating up to 200 new jobs for the area.
The scheme will be the fi rst of its kind in Wales that will convert non-hazardous waste into renewable energy such as bio-fuels and electricity.
The facility, located next to Tower Colliery in Hirwaun, will have the capacity to recycle and process _ million tonnes of waste that would otherwise have been destined for landfill.

Project director, David Williams, said: “This will be especially welcome with the ceasing of deep mining operations in the near future at Tower Colliery.”
The site is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
