They come to MOAA with various interests and experiences,
and together they make the association strong. Read on to learn
more about your fellow MOAA members.
Lt. Col. Wayne Hein, USAF-Ret. (member since 1968): Hein
entered the military following the attack on Pearl Harbor and
served in the Air Transport Command. After retiring in 1967, he became ac-
tive in community affairs. Hein and his wife, Mary, reside in Merced, Calif.
Maj. Daymond Helton, USAF-Ret. (member since 1997): Hel-
ton entered the Army in 1945, serving in France and Germany repa-
triating German POWs. He entered the Air Force in 1951, serving in Korea and
Japan in the Korean War. He taught math at the U.S. Air Force Academy for fi ve
years. As an active Gideon, he supports jail and drug rehabilitation ministries.
Col. Lester C. Hess, USAF-Ret. (member since 1969): This
90-year-old avid golfer made the pages of Houston Links for his
dedication to the sport, and he routinely shoots his age. In 1967, he retired from
the Air Force and later cofounded a company that was the world’s fi rst source
of commercial quantities of human gamma interferon.
Capt. Robert E. Kapcio, USN (life member since 1991): Kapcio
is commander of Destroyer Squadron 24 based out of Mayport, Fla.,
and a 25-year veteran of surface warfare. He currently is mission commander of
the hospital ship USNS Comfort, which is on a humanitarian deployment.
Rear Adm. Kenneth P. Moritsugu, USPHS-Ret., M.D.,
M.Ph. (life member since 2000): Moritsugu retired in October
after serving as acting surgeon general of the U.S. During his nearly 40-year ca-
reer, he was responsible for health care in federal prisons and oversight of inter-
national medical health programs and advocacy for organ and tissue donation. MO
