The Judging Panel
POWERLIST 2010
A note from our chair
elcome to this year’s Powerlist. Those of you who remember last year’s list will see that there have been a number of
W
changes. We are keen that the Powerlist remains flexible, reflecting the changes and developments in, and dynamism of,
British society. So if someone is no longer on the list it does not mean that they no longer exercise power and influence.
What it does mean is that more and more people are being brought to our attention, demonstrating the depth and
richness of the black contribution to Britain and to the world.
When we got together to judge the nominees this year we all felt that Barack Obama’s victory in the American presidential elections
offered a particular opportunity to showcase black talent. However, we were also very conscious that this talent operates in a global
context, in a world that is constantly changing and where success is not measured in terms of race but in terms of contribution.
That is what we hope the Powerlist demonstrates. That from business to academia, from politics to the performing arts, from
sport to the professions, we are committed to bringing about change. To being the best we can. The Powerlist rewards aspiration and
celebrates success. Enjoy it.
