Jaw, jaw, not
war, war
Tony Benn is leading a protest against the Afghanistan War. As the
campaigners reach the Centopath in Whitehall, they pause to read
out the names of the 200 British soldiers killed in the conflict and
200 dead Afghan citizens. The same morning, Defence Secretary
Bob Ainsworth insists that the war is “winnable” in an interview
with the BBC.
Speaking a week later it’s a view that Benn, Labour’s longest-
serving politician and president of the Stop the War coalition,
entirely refutes. “We went into Afghanistan in 2001 to capture
Osama Bin Laden. There are 64,000 NATO troops from 40
countries who have been there for eight years. They haven’t
captured Bin Laden and they can’t defeat the Taliban. As with the
Vietnam War, people are beginning to realise – regardless of the
morality of it, which is worth discussing – that it is unwinnable.”
But surely we have a moral obligation now. Pulling out would
leave Afghanistan at the mercy of the Taliban, with their appalling
human rights record and their barbaric treatment of women. “Well
it’s a very good point. On the whole, experience suggests that if
you want better conditions in a country you don’t threaten it,
because when you threaten a country it brings out the most right-
wing forces – put simply, 9/11 gave Bush a second term. The best
thing to do is provide support for the redevelopment of
Afghanistan but not pretend there’s a military solution.”
