I had always been classically trained, but somewhere along the way I fell into musical theatre. I always knew that, if I wanted to move into a career in opera, I would need to further my studies. So I auditioned here—and after two years of Vocal Studies, I moved onto Royal Academy Opera in September 2007.
If you grasp the opportunities here, there really are lots of different things to get involved in. Personally, my knowledge of repertoire has expanded greatly from listening to others and finding new pieces to prepare for classes. The opera scenes have each been challenging and rewarding in different ways. Working with a number of different coaches has really taught me to think for and challenge myself. And the regular language coaching has been great!
In addition to the opera scenes, I’ve had the opportunity to perform quite a bit. I got to sing in the Paganini Festival, in the chorus for ‘The Magic Flute’ and at Spitalfields. I’ve had a lot of outside work as well.’
