OK, the garden waste might seem a bit obvious to anyone who has spent some time pondering composting, but indoors, there are numerous opportunities to add to your future fertiliser.
Egg shells, tea bags, coffee grounds are all fair game – and some of the less likely but equally useful candidates include cardboard, shredded paper, tissues and paper napkins.
If you’re having Christmas dinner at home, you can even bulk out the compost with the paper parts of your pulled crackers.
Ideally, your compost should be a more or less even mix of green and brown materials. Generally, kitchen waste is green while paper, carboard and napkins are brown.
