Plans for new
floodgate
Changes could be made to village flood
defences to prevent a future flooding disaster
like Boscastle in 2004.
Polperro has suffered from several bad floods
in the last three decades and now the
Environment Agency are looking at replacing
the storm gate at the harbour entrance.
They already have funding for the project that
would see a tidal gate replace the existing
one but are unsure whether it will cover the
costs.
David Turner, flood risk management
technical specialist at the Environment
Agency, said: ‘It is at a very early stage.
‘We believe that removing the current storm
gate at Polperro, which is 30 years old, and
installing a tidal gate will provide a greater
level of protection to homes and businesses
from tidal flooding.’
A public consultation is under way and the
work has been put out to tender as they wait
for quotes on costs, expected mid-November,
which is when a decision will be made.
