enowned for its colour, creativity and unique cultural character,

grenada’s carnival is one of the island’s biggest annual festivals.
festivities begin in mid-July with the opening of various calypso
tents. the momentum builds through early august as steel
bands rehearse for the panorama competition, and cultural presentations
and calypso shows take place most nights. the climax comes on august 11
th

and 12
th
when J’ouvert and the parade of the Bands are held.
Some marathon revelers begin their celebrations at the Dimanche
gras show, Sunday, august 10
th
, and continue straight into J’ouvert,
during the early hours of monday morning. the Dimanche gras show
features the kings and Queens of the fancy mas Bands vying for the title

of king and Queen of the carnival. partygoers dance through the streets of
St. george’s while accompanied by the sounds of calypso bands.
on monday night (and right through to early tuesday morning!), revelers
in brightly colored clothes, waving fluorescent wands, celebrate the monday
night mas’ street jump-up.
