Japanese installation artist and serial
interventionist Nishi Tatzu likes to
take things out of the gallery. He once
stated, ‘I’m not interested in art
for experts. I want art to come to the
people, to involve them in it, and this
doesn’t happen in the gallery space.’
Indeed his work is rarely displayed in
a traditional white cube space. His
practice – which often takes existing
public sculptures and encasing them in
makeshift domestic settings – attempts
a synthesis of public and private
experience. In 2001, for example, Tatzu
took part of a Claes Oldenburg and
Coosje van Bruggen public sculpture
(a giant concrete ball from the 1977
Pool Balls at Skulptur Projekte Münster)
and built a house around it. Tama (2001)
took what was an otherwise ignored
weatherworn and graffiti-covered public
sculpture and brought it indoors, where
it jostled awkwardly among household
furniture.

(who lives in Germany) was struck
