Athens: it’s hot. And while its denizens
may flee for the Greek Isles in the
summer months, the artworld is making a
beeline for the city that birthed Western
culture. Evidencing Athens’s renaissance,
and the wealth of newer Greek collectors
following in über-collector Dakis’s
footsteps, the obligatory art fair, Art
Athina, celebrated its 13th edition at
the end of May. Meanwhile Javier Peres
is setting up a temporary space in the
city’s red-light district, which is
currently undergoing regeneration. After
Peres’s ‘twenty-seventh’ birthday party
kicks off proceedings on 07/07/07, where
Terence Koh will perform, the group
exhibition Beyond the Zero, featuring
work by Koh, Dean Sameshima, Dan Colen,
Bruce LaBruce and others, will open to
coincide with both a major exhibition
curated by Jeffrey Deitch, Fractured
Figure, at the Deste Foundation, and
the 1st Athens Biennial in September.
