International Playwrights:
A Genesis Project
To complement the Off The Wall season, the
Royal Court will present rehearsed readings of
some of the most compelling new plays which
have recently been produced in Germany.
The readings will take place on Wednesdays at 5pm in the Jerwood
Theatre Downstairs throughout the run of The Stone and Over There on:
11, 18 February 4, 11, 18 March
The first reading will be Dea Loher’s award-winning play The Final
Fire (Das letzte Feuer) translated by David Tushingham. Dea was the
first German writer to take part in an exchange with the Royal Court
when she attended the International Residency in 1993. Her play
Stranger’s House (Fremdes Haus) was presented in the first Royal
Court International Playwrights Season in 1997.
The readings will also include other dynamic new work: The Pigeons
(Die Tauben) by David Gieselmann, The Uncertainty of the Situation
(Die Unsicherheit der Sachlage) by Philipp Löhle and To the South
Seas by Gherkin Plane (Mit dem Gurkenflieger in die Südsee) by
Christoph Nussbaumeder.

The Royal Court has been involved in an exchange with new writers
from Germany since 1993. During the last fifteen years dozens of
writers have been translated into English and their plays successfully
produced on the Royal Court stages. At the same time British writers
have become part of the German repertoire. What began as a small
exchange of playwrights between the Royal Court and the Baracke
of the Deutsches Theater, Berlin in 1995 has led to a continuing
partnership with the Schaubühne Berlin. All of this work has been
supported by the Genesis Foundation and the Goethe-Institut.
