I TRAvELED vERy sImPLy (and only domestically.) my fondest
memories, and likely when the travel bug was planted,
would have to be traveling as a child with my mom, dad and
sister. We’d take long road trips to the U.s. National Parks
and camp. We rode horses in Grand Teton, snorkeled at John
Pennekamp, survived a Nor’easter on Cape Cod, danced with
Native American Indians in south Dakota and dipped our toes
in Lake Itasca, the start of the mighty mississippi. We were all
supremely happy to eat breakfasts of

songs. I never minded the communal
baths, mosquito bites or leaky tents. Any place outside my
back yard in Richfield, minnesota was the whole world, and I
was so happy to see it.

• nene’s, la Fortuna, Costa riCa
One of our guides recommended this restaurant owned by his aunt.
“Only locals go here,” he said. We ordered a huge Argentine steak
cooked over a mesquite grill and it was delivered to our table flaming
on a cast iron skillet. Homemade tortilla chips and salsa with
margarita’s topped off a fabulous and very inexpensive dinner.
