13 of the 16 1988 gold medal squad members, including three time Olympic gold medallist
Rechelle Hawkes, were present at the reunion. The 1988 gold medal victory paved the way
for the Hockeyroos to go on and become one of Australia’s most successful sporting teams
of all time, winning three Champions Trophy tournaments, two World Cups, one Common-
wealth Games Gold Medal and two Olympic Gold Medals from 1993-2000.

Every member of the gold medal Great Britain team, apart from Jon Potter, met in Man-
chester where they played against a lively England Seniors side winning by a narrow 5-4.
Television commentator Barry Davies, the guest of honour at the evening dinner delighted
the dinner audience with a reprise of his famous commentary line from Seoul after Imran
Sherwani had scored England’s third goal against Germany in the final. With the German
defence split wide open he said: “Where were the Germans, but frankly who cares!”
