On the Job
Since its launch in 2001, job posting site
GreatInsurance-Jobs.com has evolved to provide the insurance industry the largest focused insurance industry job and resume content on the Web.
The online recruiting of insurance professionals is becoming more competitive and technologically challenging, according to Scott Kotroba, president and chief executive officer of
GreatInsuranceJobs.com, the No. 1 job board for the insurance industry.
BEST’S REVIEW: What does
GreatInsuranceJobs.com offer employers and job seekers?
KOTROBA: One of the things that allows us to stand apart, besides being a niche site for the insurance industry, is how we’re able to deal with passive candidates—someone who’s fairly content with where they’re working, but might be interested in taking a look to see what else is out there. Passive candidates can join our site anonymously and receive a “job agent” that allows them to define what they would be looking for. Anytime a job is posted with those criteria, it will be sent to that candidate. We also offer products that allow us to get creative with the employer, whether they’re hiring for a high-end position or hiring a number of different people for a claims office. We can create a targeted quality e-mail marketing campaign and complement it with banner advertising on our site.
BR: What trends are you seeing?
KOTROBA: Companies want to cater specifically to the individuals they want to hire and not have to filter through a lot of people who are not qualified. We’re aggressively out there achieving partnerships with trade journals and conventions. That’s what helps us create that energy for the all-elusive passive candidate. We’re really trying to create a lot of different ways that clients can communicate with those candidates. We’re continuously exploring trends like video and audio job postings. That’s probably going to be a large part of where we’re going over the next year or so.
BR: What are the most popular features with employers?
KOTROBA: The job postings and the resume database are always the initial gateway product to everything our job site does. We offer many products that allow both job seekers and employers to be proactive in their search. But one in particular is the online career fair. We host three every year, including career fairs for sales, claims and underwriting. It’s online so job seekers don’t have to leave the house and companies don’t have to fly their HR reps or recruiters across the country.
BR: Are any new features in the works?
KOTROBA: We’re going to launch a lot of new features to boost the success rate of both the job seeker and the employer, while maintaining what our customers love best about our site—its ease of use.
BR: What advice do you have for job seekers?
KOTROBA: You must be active. It’s not a matter of posting your resume out there and sitting back and waiting for e-mails; or waking up in the morning, applying to a couple jobs and sitting back and waiting—follow up with a phone call or be creative. You need to take control of your career. You need to be proactive. A job site is a very useful part of your marketing mix, but it shouldn’t be your only resource. The insurance business is vast, but it is still very tight when it comes to relationships. You need to tap into those relationships and look for referrals.
