A rugby league player’s
one week training plan
Below is a breakdown of Chev’s typical one week training plan during the season
TASK: Using your knowledge from your
course explain to a partner why Chev’s week is
structured this way.
Sunday
After the game the emphasis is on recovery. Players will
normally have a pool session swimming approximately
twenty lengths. Then there is further recovery by
alternating between a hot pool and ice baths. Thirty
seconds in each for five repetitions.
Monday
Continue with recovery. Undertake a light weights and
cardiovascular session in the morning followed by a pool
session for twenty minutes that mainly consists of water
running and stretching. Video analysis and a debrief of
the previous day’s game during the afternoon.
Tuesday
A session of heavy weights and skills training. During the
afternoon players work on technical areas that have been
highlighted during the video analysis session. Followed by
a hot pool/ice bath session
Wednesday
Day off but may include light activity for example bike ride
or swim.
Thursday
Weight session followed by video analysis of next
opponents. Skills training developed from the analysis
session in the afternoon.
Friday
Exactly the same as Thursday except no video analysis
Saturday
Work on game play for the forthcoming match and
generally prepare for the game
