Universal Studios is decamping to the dessert, well kind of. Universal
Parks & Resorts is to build a Studios park as part of a larger Universal
City development at the even larger Dubailand resort. It’s all dessert
at the moment, but once this and other parts of Dubailand open, it
will boast only the dessert heat.
Within the industry, speculation about Dubailand is often matched by
scepticism. It’s true that the total number of projects there has been
slashed, but it’s still a massive undertaking. Word has it that
developer Tatweer is suddenly taking the park component a lot more
seriously, and real estate is taking a back seat; after all there’s
enough of it elsewhere in Dubai. Universal’s involvement will no
doubt be a catalyst for many more leisure-based projects at
Dubailand.
In Europe, theme park fans will now be faced with a choice of visiting
either Universal Studios in Orlando or Dubai, the latter closer in
many cases. It’s true the world is getting a smaller place, really small.
Not only are more citizens travelling further and more frequently, but
tried and tested entertainment brands, think also Disney, Lego,
Madame Tussauds and others, are opening up in more places. Isn’t
there a danger that some of them will become so ubiquitous that they
loose what made them special?
