I came to a place in our careers
Nicole Rego
where we had to make a very

tough decision.

Both of us worked for a large corporation within the cash flow industry.

Both of us were very well compensated, had great retirement accounts, and
Tracy Z. Rewey
had no complaints regarding the usual work-related issues of insurance,
vacation time, or autonomy on projects.

The one dream we were not fulfilling was the one of working for ourselves.

bottle of wine, and deciding what our future careers, would hold — and
Ashlee Jones, Paul Lalley, Eric J. Leech,
more important, what we wanted to do personally in the coming years.
Blake Morrow, Tracy Z. Rewey, Steven E. The risk-reward ratio seemed disproportionate. On the one hand, we had

up. We also knew there was a pretty good chance we would not make the

same money on our own as we were making working for a large corporation.
Editorial Assistant But we still wanted more.

to start our first company together — in the basement of our house. We had

some money, a lot of experience, and an overwhelming drive to make it on

our own.
Accounting
It wasn’t long after we took that first step when we realized it was the best

move we ever made. Not because we ended up making more money than
Jennifer Hamilton, Diane Tomlin
we thought possible, but because we were successful — on our own terms.

We also learned a lot about each other in the process. For example, we

discovered that we function better when we divide and conquer. Although

I think we both agree that working side-by-side was the most satisfying aspect

of the whole adventure, Tracy and I rarely share projects today. Instead, we

In this month’s issue, you’ll read about another corporate couple who

ventured into the world of business ownership. Paul and Cara Allen both

gave up their corporate jobs to start, of all things, a one-stop pet food shop.

Their success story is not only inspiring, it’s also chock-full of great ideas
