Belgian photographer Serge Leblon is the man behind the atmospheric
images of this month’s cover story, artist Subodh Gupta. Leblon has
had work published in a range of titles, including The Face, Vogue,
Another Magazine, Pop, 032c, Big, i-D, The New York Times, Vanity
Fair, Self Service and Purple. He has also shot campaigns for Tsumori
Chisato, Cacharel, Isabel Marant and Martine Sitbon, among many
others. He published his first monograph in 2000 and also works in
video around the subjects of silence and violence. An exhibition of
his work, The Vanishing, was held at the Bank Galerie, Paris, earlier
in the autumn.
David Blandy’s work highlights the slippage and tension between
fantasy and reality in everyday life – his everyday life, to be
precise. Whether as a white man mouthing the words to the underground
soul classic Is It Because I’m Black? in the video Hollow Bones
(2001) or being taught how to make art by the deceased martial-arts
star Bruce Lee in Emotional Content (2003), his work humorously
questions the extent to which the self is formed by mass media, and
whether one can have an identity beyond that. For this month’s Strip,
the artist has created Not Thinking Yet Not Dreaming.
Oliver Helbig is a Berlin-based photographer. His shoot with artist
Thomas Schütte marked a return to Düsseldorf, where he lived during
his school years. Regarding the assignment, Oliver says, “This trip
involved quite a nostalgic moment visiting the Rhine, which I miss a
lot. After the pictures were taken we smoked a cigarette and had
coffee in the kitchen.” All in a day’s work for a photographer whose
work has appeared in 032c, Süddeutsche Magazin, Another Magazine
and Dazed & Confused. He has recently shown work in group shows at
André Schlechtriem gallery, New York, and Goethe-Institut, Tokyo.
James Heartfield blew the whistle on New Labour’s ‘Creative Britain’
hype in books and articles, including Great Expectations: The
Creative Industries in the New Economy (2002) and Creativity Gap
(2005). His latest book, Let’s Build!, explains why Britain’s housing
market is booming but no new houses are being built. He is currently
based at the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of
Westminster, London.
Matthew Rose is an artist and writer based in Paris. He writes
regularly on art, culture, fashion and business for Art & Antiques
and Entrée, among other publications.
Photographer Atlanta Rascher was born in Germany and is now based in
London. Atlanta started out as a painter and later moved into fashion
before finally committing to photography in 2004. She has since
collaborated on a major art project with the British fashion house
Boudicca, the results of which can be seen in her first book, due out
in late 2008. Since 2004 Atlanta has been a regular contributor to
kid’s wear magazine, for whom she is currently UK Editor. Her work
has also appeared in Japanese Vogue, Grafik magazine, Very, Qvest and
Dazed & Confused.
