WAITING GAME: Contestants ready for the off at the 505 East Coast Championships at Blackwater Sailing Club
BLACKWATER Sailing Club played host to the
505 East Coast Championships on the 29th and
30th September.
In light winds that tested the skills of the expe-
rienced travelling boats, the home pairing of Brett
Townsend and Andy Denniss set the pace for race
1 on Saturday. After shaking off an early
challenge by fellow BSC team Charlie Stewart
and John Gibson they led to the finish closely
followed by Martin Hodgson and Adrian Miles.
Martin and Adrian found their feet on an altered
course in race 2 and took the honours with Chris
Dando and Don Sloan in second. Brett and Andy
gained a well earned third after fighting their way
back up the fleet, having been buried at the start.
On Sunday after an initial postponement to
allow the wind to fill in, everyone had it all to play
for. In race 3 Arthur George and Dennis
Cartwright took first place but were followed
home closely by Brett and Andy who were now
showing the most consistent results.
Race 4 saw some changing fortunes with Steve
Perkins and Gareth Davis taking a very well
deserved second place to Arthur and Dennis, who
led the fleet home again to ensure an overall sec-
ond place for the weekend. Brett and Andy how-
ever, in the newly fitted out “Coolio Julio”,
remained cool - having ensured they had done
enough to win the event.
Chris Dando was seventh overall but as this was
the final event on the East Coast Calendar the
results meant that he had won the Championship
with Arthur George and Denniss Cartwright second.
