More to Merthyr than meets the eye …

If you’re looking for a new career you may not realise what opportunities exist outside of Cardiff. T-Mobile’s light and airy contact centre is based in Merthyr Tydfil and home to 750 agents. Three inbound sales advisors who work at the contact centre explain what T-Mobile offers and why they wouldn’t go back to working in Cardiff.

Talking of why he moved from working in Cardiff, Alan Monks, 23, says: ‘‘I leapt at the chance because the opportunities here are so much better and there is clear career progression. With the support of your team leader you can train to be a team manager, nothing is out of reach. I’m currently a ‘Web ‘nWalk’ champion promoting phone web packages and training my team too.’’

Jason Tyler, 26, agrees: ‘‘When you start here you receive great training with details of how you can progress and clear sales targets to help you achieve this.’’

T-Mobile also offers competitive benefits packages and incentives schemes, Jason says: ‘‘I much prefer the shift pattern here, there’s more flexibility, I can start slightly later whereas my last job had rigid working hours. My salary is better too, not only do I get a good basic rate of pay but I’m set sales targets which are achievable and realistic so when I reach these I get commission.’’

Talking of incentives, Stephen comments: ‘‘T-Mobile is always running schemes like ‘Euro Winners’ where you have the chance to win a holiday. I once went on a cruise in Sardinia and am on target to win again this year. There’s also a bonus scheme and if you reach sales targets you can receive commission of up to 50% of your salary.’’

The contact centre in Merthyr has good transport links by bus and train and is easily accessed via the express highway. Jason lives in Cardiff and says: ‘‘Believe it or not it takes me the same time to drive to Merthyr as it did to drive and park in Cardiff because you’re going in the opposite direction to all the traffic – plus we get free parking.’’

Stephen says: ‘‘I live in Merthyr and have the choice of getting a bus or a train which only takes me ten minutes. When I worked in Cardiff I used to get caught up in all the traffic which added several hours onto my day.’’

The company prides itself on its working culture and atmosphere, Jason says: ‘‘I used to be cooped up in my last job with call after call, here it’s hard work but a lot of fun and I have such a great rapport with my team and we all get on well.’’

Stephen adds: ‘‘We’re all friends in the team and get on like a house on fire, there’s a good atmosphere and we have space to personalize our work stations which helps you feel at home and be yourself.’’
