Favorite. The new gallery arataniurano opened
just the other month between Ginza and Tsukiji.
Launching with a show by Izumi Kato – a
force to be reckoned with at Venice this year –
the gallery has got off to a promising start,
selling out just 30 minutes after opening. Most
of these new spaces, such as Misako & Rosen
in Otsuka and Takefloor in Ebisu, are run by
ex-staff of the older galleries, and echo the G9
generation in their penchant for young artists
of their own generation. Yet there are significant
differences: ten years ago gallerists and artists
shared a mission – to give the Japanese art
scene a much-needed boost in the dark days
following the collapse of the bubble economy.
Nowadays the outlook is considerably brighter.
The status of art in the cultural scene as a
whole has improved, and economic conditions
are also better. Buying and selling overseas is
now taken for granted. Operating in such
conditions, the new galleries have settled into
an uncomplicated business mindset devoid
of any odd notions or strong sense of mission,
which has left them somewhat lacking – a little
too well mannered and understated, but as
such, inarguably representative of the times,
adding substance to the Tokyo art scene.
Let us touch briefly also on the annual
Art Fair Tokyo, a unique mix of contemporary
art and antique/craft together with galleries of
