A solid career option

An Accounting Technicians Ireland qualification is accessible, flexible and an excellent career move in today’s current economic climate

NOW more than ever, employers have become increasingly aware of the critical role that accounting technicians can play in managing their finance function. Margaret Ryan FIATI, president of Accounting Technicians Ireland, pointed out: “Accounting technicians perform a wide range of key finance roles – every- thing from accounts staff up to financial controller and beyond. “In a small company, they may be the

only qualified employee looking after finance, while in a larger company, they may be working as part of a team along- side accountants and administrative staff.”

Accounting Technicians Ireland (for-

merly IATI) is the leading professional body for accounting technicians on the island of Ireland. Established in 1983, it represents over 10,000 people working in the profession. “The Accounting Technicians Ireland

qualification is an attractive route for many people who want to fast-track a career in accounting as it can be obtained in as little as two years,” explained Ryan. “It’s very appealing for those who want to

enter the profession or simply need to formalise their workplace learning with a professional qualification.” The Accounting Technicians Ireland

qualification is incredibly accessible and allows students the choice of studying full time, part time or through distance learn- ing – thus affording them the opportunity to work and study at the same time. “The qualification is very much geared towards working in a business environ- ment, as all our students must combine two years of study with two years’ work experience,” said Ryan. In Ireland, becoming an accounting technician is a very solid career option, continued Ryan. “Looking at our most recent member survey, less than 5pc of our members are currently unemployed so there is great demand out there for accounting technicians.” In Northern Ireland, the qualification

has recently been approved at Level 5 on the UK Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). This latest develop- ment means that any student starting the course in Northern Ireland from September 2011 will have their qualifica-

tion officially recognised across all UK frameworks. While it is primarily a stand-alone pro- fessional qualification, the Accounting Technicians Ireland qualification can also act as a stepping stone into the senior accounting bodies, including its partner body Chartered Accountants Ireland, ACCA, CIMA, and CPA. Accounting Technicians Ireland courses

are available at over 80 colleges in practi- cally every county throughout the Republic and Northern Ireland. In addition to its network of partner

colleges, Accounting Technicians Ireland also runs its Accounting Technicians Professional Education programme, where it delivers lectures directly to both first and second-year students. Classes run two nights a week over 25

weeks and are delivered from the Chartered Accountants Ireland training centre on Pearse Street, Dublin where Accounting Technicians Ireland also has its head office.
