WIT STUDENTS STAND OUT IN CAI EXAMS
Students who study accounting at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) will gain generous exemptions and excellent career options
IN both 2009 and 2010 students from the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) School of Business were awarded first place in the CAP 2 examination of Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI), which is the largest professional accountancy body in Ireland. In 2010 one of those students and one graduate from the WIT’s Master’s in Business (MB) in Accounting were among the prize winners for being in the top 10 placed candidates in the country in the CAI Final Admitting Examination (FAE). These candidates are following in a long tradition of WIT students becom- ing prize winners in the professional examinations of the major accountancy bodies (see photo). WIT offers a three-year specialised,
focused BA (Honours) in Accounting, which gains generous exemptions from the examinations of all the major pro- fessional bodies. This can be followed by the one-year WIT MB in Accounting. Thus, students who successfully com-
plete this four-year cycle in WIT, and who enter a training contract to become chartered accountants, will have only the FAE to complete. This is equal to the greatest level of exemption available to any university or college. In addition, WIT’s BA (Honours) in Accounting, in common with virtually all primary degrees in the School of Business, is recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland and can be used as the primary degree element of the sec- ondary teacher training programme. It may also be used for admission to many programmes at master’s level both in Ireland and internationally.

John White, president (2009–2010) of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland presents Tracey Larkin and Noeleen Daly with presti- gious sponsored merit awards for WIT accounting students students.
A key objective of the Institute of Technology (IT) Carlow’s Honours Degree and two-year Higher Certificate in Accounting is to pre- pare graduates for life-long skill development and learning through experience and professional or aca- demic education. The Honours Degree provides stu- dents with expertise in accountancy, IT and management. The Higher Certificate course focuses on accounting and related IT skills and graduates can join the Honours Degree at Year 2.
Students also benefit from IT Carlow’s strong links with profes- sional bodies and local accountancy
exemptions from most professional exams with the four main accountan- cy bodies (ICAI, CPA, CIMA and ACCA) and the degree is recognised by the Department of Education & Science for HDip entry in the sub- jects Accounting and Business, lead- ing to a career in second level teach- ing.
“Employment opportunities are plentiful for graduates of this IT Carlow degree programme. There is a general optimism in the accountan- cy recruitment market, ensuring a growing demand for accountants. Opportunities may exist as a trainee accountant in practice or industry and further study will allow the graduate to qualify as a professional accountant,” said Susan Brennan, programme director of the BA (Hons) in Accounting at IT Carlow. “The many options available to graduates of the programme provide good career opportunities both at home and abroad in practice, indus- try, consultancy, taxation, financial markets, banking and insurance, education and the public sector.”
