In a bold move to bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe, the Government has announced its intention to increase the minimum annual holiday entitlement from 20 days per year to 24 days with the promise of a further 4 days to follow in the future.
Jim Fitzpatrick, DTI Employment Relations Minister said: “This extra time off will make a real difference in the lives of hard-working people - a proper rest from work and more time to spend with their families and friends.
“Businesses will benefit too – from reduced absenteeism and a workforce who are more motivated and productive.
“We have listened to all parties responding in the latest consultation, and we have agreed a number of changes in the way the new holidays will be brought in.”
The extra first 4 days will come into effect this coming October.
Building boom will create 5,000 jobs
Wales is experiencing a thirty-year high and unprecedented boom in construction, according to industry specialists.
According to a BBC report, the growth of Cardiff, Newport and Swansea is spearheading development that will create 5,000 new jobs each year until 2011 according to Construction Skills, an organisation which represents the building trade.
It anticipates more than 400 new projects over the next five years, with a value of nearly £15bn.
In Cardiff city centre, parts of the Hayes area have been flattened to make way for the £535m St David’s 2 shopping centre.
13 miles further down the road in Newport, the Old Town Dock, roads and the retail sector are being revamped ahead of the Ryder Cup in 2010.
And Swansea is continuing with the redevelopment of the SA1 docks area, with further plans for a £1bn transformation over the next 20 years
