Cleveleys Tides: Urban Regeneration Award
Continuing the theme of success Scott Wilson won the
British Construction Industry Awards 2008 – Environmental
Award in October. It was for the landscape architecture for
a new promenade for the Lancashire seaside resort of
Cleveleys. Its seafront requires protection by shore defences
to prevent flooding during storms and high tides. The town’s
current defences are being replaced and this has given the
opportunity to improve its appearance and appeal as a
visitor destination.
The winning design comprised sinuous wave revetments,
integrated flood walls, a split level promenade and a series
of shelters.
The needs of visitors, and especially families, were central
to the whole design concept and so the remodelling of a
local park to create a place to play, when the tide is in, was
incorporated into the design.
The first phase is now complete with the full works
anticipated to last until 2011.
