A coconut farmer from
barangay Basak, Guihulngan
City, northern Negros Oriental
was recently chosen as a
national nominee for the
Gawad Saka-Coconut farming
awards.
One of the owners of MC
Integrated Farm, Samuel
Rison, will represent Central
Visayas in the national finals
of the Gawad Saka search in
Manila.
Philippine Coconut Authority
manager Brendan Trasmonte
said Rison was one of the first
batch of coconut farmers who
received an incentive for the
Participatory Coconut Planting
Program.
Rison runs a farm using
techniques for integrated
coconut farming and goat
raising. This followed the
adoption of organic farming
technology in the province.
Cebu
If you are craving Cebu’s
delicious lechon or roasted pig,
be prepared to shell out at least
P200 more as prices of swine,
feed and spices continue to
increase.
A kilo of lechon has also
increased by P10 to P20,
according to owners of lechon
houses in Cebu.
Enrico Veloso Dionson, owner
of Rico’s Lechon in barangay
Talamban, Cebu City said a
small lechon, which can be
consumed by 25 to 30 people,
now costs P3,200 from P3,000 a
month ago.
Dionson, who gets his native
swine from Negros Oriental,
said he was forced to increase
his prices because the cost
of animal feed, charcoal and
spices has also increased.
He said one 45kg sack of
animal feed used to be P530
last year, but now costs P695, a
P165 increase.
Pangasinan
Fishpens are set to be phased
out in Anda town, one of the
biggest producers of bangus
in Pangasinan, in one year’s
time.
This was disclosed by Anda
mayor Nestor Pulido.
He said Anda and adjacent
Bolinao town escaped a
catastrophic fishkill which
would have cost bangus
producers millions of pesos in
losses.
