DEBATE!
Did you enjoy watch-
ing the Olympic hockey
on TV or online? Were
there moments when you
lost the ball? So could
the game be improved to
make it more watchable?
Hands up who thinks we need a more easily umpired and un-
derstood game which rewards enterprise and values the open
skills more than those of a few powerful flickers.
But how could the rules facilitate this? Here are five ideas for
starters:
1. Only have nine players on a pitch. Nine players on the pitch at any one time and two
required to be in their attacking half. This would thus remove four potential defenders
from the defensive circle and open up space for attacking play.
2. The six defenders could not fill all the space in the circle. The circle action would then
be more open and less dangerous.
3. Penalise shielding the ball. When it is done by the player in possession of the ball it is
rarely penalised yet is contrary to the rules, and stifles the game.
4. Ease restrictions on the video umpire. Two ‘captain’s appeals’ per game, anyone?
5. Allowing the use of both sides of the stick. Would mean that the left to right hit could
be much more accurate and controlled.
6. Extra umpires. Behind the goals? Or in a chair by the side of the pitch like in tennis?
Are we insane or do you think they would improve the game AND make it more watchable?
