new safety campaign, launched this year
by the Fork Lift Truck Association, can
reduce accident rates in “the deadliest
month of the year”.
The UK’s 350,000 fork lift trucks do an
unparalleled amount of good work, but they
do account for more serious accidents at
work than cars and HGVs combined. Over
400 employees are hospitalised annually as
a result. One person is killed, on average,
every six weeks - increasing to fortnightly
in September.
FLTA Chief Executive David Ellison
says: “Every day in Britain, someone is
hospitalised in a fork lift truck accident that
could have easily been avoided. Sadly,
some are killed - and most of these people
were not operating the truck at the time.
“Whether it’s at work or in their local
DIY store or garden centre, we want people
to be aware that whenever they see a fork
lift truck they should be on their guard.
They need to be careful, keep clear, and
certainly never assume the operator has
seen them.
National Fork Lift Safety Week (22nd -
28th September 2008) marks the culmina-
tion of a month-long campaign to reduce
the number of accidents. Its message
extends beyond truck operators, to those
working alongside fork lifts and members
of the public.
Statistics suggest that possibly two
thirds of fork lift truck accidents kill or
injure someone other than the driver. So,
anybody visiting or working at any one of
the UK’s 100,000 estimated businesses
using a fork lift truck is at risk.
“Our aim for National Fork Lift Safety
Week is that nobody will be injured or
killed,” says David Ellison. “To meet this
target, we need the public to be alert, so we
are asking everyone to pass the message on
to their colleagues and friends. Vigilant
managers, operators and other employees
can make this happen!”
Businesses representing every industry
will be encouraged to take up a range of
