YOUGHAL
Youghal is a picturesque seaport at the mouth of the Blackwater River
near the Waterford border. One of Ireland’s Heritage Towns, it is
renowned today for its beaches. Youghal once boasted Sir Walter
Raleigh as mayor, and his 15th century home, ‘Myrtle Grove’, is
reputed to be the site of the first planting of a potato in Ireland.
Earlier, the town was a 13th century walled seaport; it still contains
Ballymaloe the ruins of the Benedictine Priory from the same period. Also of

interest are the 17th century Clock Tower and Dutch-style Red House,
the medieval Tyntes Castle, and St. Mary’s Church, which dates from

the 12th century. Today, Youghal is a popular resort for all the family,
thanks chiefly to the numerous Blue Flag beaches nearby. A leisurely
stroll in the town takes in local potteries, craft shops and various
coffee houses and restaurants. For those looking for a more active
break, golf and all major aquatic sports are catered for.
Just up the hill from Myrtle Grove on the site of an earlier 11th
century Danish church stands one of the oldest functioning churches
in Ireland – St. Mary’s Church of Ireland, otherwise known as St.
Mary’s Collegiate Church. St. Mary’s was built in 1220 after the
