LATINO AMERICA pt 2 by Ricardo Chavez-Munoz
5 NEW CASINOS IN PUERTO RICO BY 2010
Puerto Rico is one of the few countries with consistent and secure gaming development
in the Americas region. As one of the premier tourist destinations in the Caribbean,
investors and operators are developing new hotels and refurbishing existing ones, whether
locally owned or major brands such as Marriott.
Hector Rivera Dávila, Gaming Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, said: "We
continue with some new projects for hotel casinos, and for 2010 we have approved five
already. Investors are interested in this country because we are part of the USA and we have
strict regulations to protect investment. The gaming industry is stable with steady growth."
PANAMA GAMING GREW 30 PER CENT IN 2007
The gaming industry in Panama maintains its dynamic growth of the past 10 years, with a
30 per cent increase in revenue reaching US$90.5 million in 29 casinos, 14 slots opera-
tions and one race track in Panama City. During the last gaming expo in Panama, three top
executives of the biggest operators in the country made a sound and accurate presentation
of past and future developments in the industry.
In synthesis, the past 10 years of regulated gaming in Panama has seen both tourist and
gaming industry expand considerably, as they both go hand in hand in the country, with
full casino licensing available to hotels with more than 300 rooms. At present, there are at
least two casinos that will open in 2008, with around half a dozen hotels and resorts near-
ing completion thereafter. Buenos Aires Palermo race track and a few miles down the road the Cirsa boats are
