Scarves or “artist squares” developed by Czech refugee Zika Ascher (1910–92) and his wife Lida (–1983), who started a London textile business in 1939. Breaking away from the drabness of the WWII period, they invited artists like Marie Laurencin, Henry Moore, Henri Matisse, Jean Cocteau and Alexander Calder to work in their screen-printing workshop.
