GRACEFUL and powerful
– descriptions frequently
applied to His and Her
Majesty’s ships in the age
of iron and steel – were
adjectives epitomised
by the County-class
destroyer, Britain’s fi rst
true warship of the missile
age.
For two decades these fine
ships were the Fleet’s first line
of defence against air attack
– bolstered from the early
1970s by HMS Bristol and the
first Type 42 destroyers, led by
HMS Sheffield.
Two batches of County-
class ships were ordered by
the Admiralty in the late 1950s
and early 1960s.
The first comprised Her
Majesty’s Ships London (D16),
Devonshire (D02), Hampshire
(D06) and Kent (D12), the
second Fife (D20), Glamorgan
(D19), Antrim (D18) and Norfolk
(D21), the last County to be
laid down in February 1966.
All eight were designed
