HERMANUS
The pretty coastal town of Hermanus is adorned with golden beaches
and secluded bays and offers some of the best land-based whale
watching in the world. Southern Right Whales visit every year from
May to December and often come within 10m of the coast.
Other attractions include deep-sea fi shing, cage diving with sharks
and many charming boutiques and restaurants.
MOSSEL BAY
This is often considered to be the unoffi cial start of the Garden Route.
From here, head inland towards the Outeniqua Mountains and explore
the famous Cango Caves or board the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam
train for a picturesque rail journey to Knysna.
KNYSNA
This charming coastal resort sits on a beautiful lagoon renowned for
watersports and prolifi c bird life. Be sure to explore the lakes and forests
of Wilderness National Park and, if you’re visiting in early July, don’t miss
the famous Knysna Oyster Festival.
PLETTENBERG BAY
Take some time to relax on the long white beaches of this exclusive
resort and browse the boutiques. Have lunch in the bay, or pack a picnic
and journey into the magnifi c ent Tsitsikamma Forest, home to giant
Yellowwood and Stinkwood trees.
N.B. Peak season can get very busy, as it’s such a popular resort,
so please book early to avoid disappointment.
PORT ELIZABETH
Travel over the Storms River Bridge and through popular
Jeffrey’s Bay to arrive in Port Elizabeth, South Africa’s friendly city.
GAME RESERVES
The opportunity to go on safari is not to be missed, and we highly
recommend that you include one of the Eastern Cape’s game reserves
in your itinerary and stay for at least two nights. Around 90 minutes
drive from Port Elizabeth, both Shamwari and Kariega Game Reserves
are highly recommended, are malaria free and offer the chance to spot
abundant wildlife including Africa’s famous Big Five; elephants, lions,
leopards, rhino and buffalo. (See page 138 for details.)
