Cruising the Baltic:
Copenhagen & Stockholm
Richard Ryan
MANY OF THE CRUISES THAT EXPLORE NORTHERN EUROPE, SCANDINAVIA AND THE BALTIC SEA REGION FEATURE THE SPEC-
TACULAR CITIES OF COPENHAGEN AND STOCKHOLM. ADDING A PRE- OR POST-CRUISE STAY FOR PASSENGERS ON THESE
CRUISES IS A NATURAL SELL. TO ENCOURAGE LONGER PRE- OR POST-CRUISE STAYS, LET CLIENTS KNOW ABOUT ALL THE
EXPERIENCES THEY CAN ENJOY IN THESE SEASIDE CITIES.
Copenhagen will set a new record in terms of the number of passengers, dockings and turnarounds once again this year.
Around 300 cruise ships have given notification of their arrival in 2008, of which at least two ships will offer Christmas
cruises. This year Copenhagen welcomed 420,000 cruise passengers, five percent more than last year. Stockholm is ex-
pecting a record of 270 calls at the port and 35 turnarounds next year. More than 281,000 passengers enjoyed the sights
in Stockholm this season.
The selling features below, and on the pages that follow, will help you position the two cities not only as cruise ports,
but also as must-stay pre- or post-cruise destinations. For agents, it’s a way to boost commissions, and for clients it’s an
opportunity to see more of these historically-rich cities and a chance to enhance their Northern cruise holiday.
Efficient Infrastructure: Thanks to an excellent transportation system, getting around the Baltic cities is easy, efficient
and economical. For regional touring on pre- or post-cruise stays, there are numerous rail, bus and rental car options.
Both Copenhagen and Stockholm are easy to explore, with most major attractions and sites an easy walking distance
from each other.
World Class Sightseeing: Historic castles and palaces, stunning architecture, year-round festivals, sophisticated dining,
excellent shopping, outstanding music and cultural events are among the attractions that your clients can experience.
Up-selling Opportunities: Even if your clients have cruised to or from The Baltic Sea Region before, there is always
something new happening here. The cities and surrounding regions are so compact and easy to navigate that your clients
can see and do a lot during a pre- or post-cruise stay. Book them on a land-based program that takes in the highlights of
sights in and around town, or tailor a package to your clients’ special interests, such as architecture and design, history,
music or food. You can even send them off on bike tours or other active holidays.
More Commission: The Baltic region continues to experience a boom in popularity, with more ships calling here than
ever before. More ships mean more capacity, and more opportunity for you to book your clients on a fabulous cruise
through the Baltic region.
Less Red Tape: Cruising is a convenient and hassle-free way for your clients to explore the Baltic region. No visas are
necessary for US citizens and no costly arrival or departure fees required.
