Murakami, two of Japan’s best-known
yet dissimilar artists, garner more
attention in the west for their
overlaps with famous occidental

relationships with the west – and with
their own country’s relatively insular
cultural history – is clearly wanting,
which is why the forthcoming
exhibitions at Tokyo’s Mori art Museum
and new York’s Japan Society gallery
could not be more timely.
